John Hughes was part of the 1st/5th Battalion of the King’s Liverpool Regiment which served under the British Army during the First World War. The battalion was mobilised for war in 1915, landed at the Havre, transferred to the 6th Brigade of the 2nd Division and then engaged in various actions across the Western Front including the Battle of Festubert and the Battle of Loos. In 1916, they were transferred to the 99th Brigade of the 2nd Division and then fought in the Battle of Delville Wood and the Battle of Ancre before being transferred to the 165th Brigade of the 55th Division. Then, the battalion engaged in various actions across the Western Front including the Battles of Guillemont, Ginchy, Flers-Courcelette and Morval. Finally, in 1917 the battalion fought in the Battles of Ypres and at some point during this conflict John Hughes was killed.
