Germany made a bid to win the war in early 1918 with their Spring Offensive. After stunning success in the opening weeks, the offensive lost momentum and, with hundreds of thousands of American soldiers pouring into France, Germany called an end to it.
In August, the Allies attacked at Amiens. Their victory here was the beginning of the end for Germany, whose armies crumbled as they were pushed back toward their own border.
The German commanders realised the war was over and asked for an armistice, which came into effect on the 11th November.
